FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Making a difference the need for leadership
Thomas More made a difference in his world. We are looking for high school students who want to make a difference in outs. To understand snore clearly the complexities and the challenges of great leadership. we will investigate the life. times, and writings of Sir Thomas More.
More's life shatters the common view that one must be corrupt to he successful, or that integrity and high principles are doomed to failure -although More's life also teaches us that upright individuals do run risks in pursuing truth and justice. A brilliant lawyer, author and diplomat. More rose to become the Lord Chancellor of England, the highest office next to the king. St. Thomas, canonized in 1935. was also a man of principle of of deep faith, one who in the end paid for these commitments with his head.
A man for all seasons
It is not surprising that one of the most popular dramas written in recent times is based on the life of Thomas More. Robert Bolt's A Man for Seasons Seasons proved that More's life was dramatic: our three-week course will show that it is also highly instructive, that it can help teach the principles of leadership
Exploring London
Our focus on Thomas More will help us bring London into focus After all. More was horn in London and lived there most of his life. Some of the many places we will visit are:
Parliament, where More debated and worked as both a member and the Speaker of the House
The Tower of London. where he was imprisoned
London Bridge. where his severed head was displayed
Westminster Hall, where he practiced law and where he was sentenced to death
The Inns of Court. where he studied (as did Tennyson. Dickens, Donne. and Chaucer)
. . . and beyond London
Hampton Court Palace, where he worked with Cardinal Wolsey
Canterbury. home of' the famous St. Thomas Becketand England's most popular place of' pilgrimage, which More also visited
Crosby Hall. More's home in Chelsea on the Thames where we will study More's influence on the Bard.

Good conversation with interesting friends
Meeting other bright and interesting high school students from different backgrounds and places is an important part of the UD Study Abroad Programs. Come and join us if you seek the world of ideas, good conversation, and the challenges posed for the future leaders of our times.
Leadership and the intellectual life
We will be living in Oxford, home of one of the oldest and greatest universities in the world, where More himself studied. As we walk through these ancient streets and colleges, we will learn about the legacies of leaders who studied here. We will also learn why serious study is essential to true leadership.
Great literature
Besides lectures and on-site tours, we will read and discuss Thomas More's intriguing and highly debated Utopia, his prison letters, and his writings on statesmanship. We will see and discuss Robert Bolt's A Man Fur All Seasons (winner of six Academy Awards). as well as Shakespeare's Richard 111 which is based on More's history of the same name.
The adventure of learning a tradition at UD
The University of Dallas, a private Catholic university, has offered study abroad programs as part of its undergraduate curriculum for more that twenty-five years. Over 4.()00 of our students have studied abroad as a way of enhancing their appreciation of our Western heritage. UD also offers to high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while studying and traveling in England. Program features include:

guided visits through some of England's most important historical sites
a focus on principles of leadership

The director of Thomas More in England, Dr. Gerard Wegemer is the author of several books on More, and has received numerous teaching awards during his twenty years as an educator. He will be assisted by staff members who have experience with the UD Study Abroad Programs.
At home in Oxford - rugby and high tea
Our home-away-from-home will be St. Edward's, Oxford. Students will have private rooms. three meals a day, and on special occasions. the school's traditional "afternoon tea." The St. Edward's campus has 90 acres of sports fields as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
Thomas More in England
The cost of the program, $3700, covers airfare and land travel, tuition, room and board as well as museum fees and entry passes to historical sites. With the exception of no more than four lunches, all meals are provided. Applications for a few, limited need-based scholarships for qualified students are available upon request.
The program is designed for students who are bright, curious. and mature. If you will be a high school junior. senior, or a recent graduate, we would like to hear from you. Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive three hours of transferable college credit.
